Special value:

This specialisation collection serves as a reference collection for one of the subfamilies [Bromelioideae] within the Bromeliaceae. The collection is available for scientific research and educational purposes and contributes to maintaining biodiversity.

Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:

The Bromelioideae collection was donated by the Hortus Botanicus Leiden in 1982. Part of this collection is on display within the Zoo enhanced with an array of tropical butterflies, but the greater part of the collection is not open to the public. Enlargement of the collection has been taking place since 2000 using seed and cuttings from plants of known wild origin. Future plans include a prominent display of bromeliads within a new greenhouse dedicated to the flora and fauna of Suriname greenhouse [a policy of Rotterdam Zoo is to group plants and animals according to the continent or geographical region of origin]. By displaying the immense variability in bromeliad growth forms, the Rotterdam Zoo is increasing public awareness of the value and vulnerability of nature and thereby realising one of its educational goals.
