Mentioned collection is the Dutch National collection, other botanical gardens also possess plants from this group, but they are not part of the National collection.
NP collection present:
Solanaceae [Nightshade family]
Collection size:
58 genera, 3145 accessions.
Special value:
This collection of wild, non-tubular species forms an essential addition to the collection of the CGN [Center for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands] in Wageningen, which includes species and cultivars of both tubular and non-tubular Solanaceae.
Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:
This collection consists of non-tubular Solanaceae species from many different genera. A collection on this scale can be found nowhere else in the World. The plants in this species collection are being used for scientific research within the Radboud University. Other collections include the genebank, herbarium, slide-collection and an extensive library. Because of the scope of the collection as a whole the Botanical Garden participates in EGGNET an European project under the framework dealing with the use and management of wild species related to the eggplant (aubergine). Further participation lies with the CBSG [Center for Biosystems Genomics] and two projects financed by the National Science Foundation in America focusing on the taxonomy and nomenclature of Solanum and Lycium species.
