Mentioned collections are all DNC collections, other botanical gardens also possess plants from these groups, they are not part of the National collection.
NP collections present:
Coniferae [Pine family]
Cryptomeria spp [Coniferae]
Madagascar plants - collection still under construction
Collection size:
18 genera, 18 species and 22 cultivars.
Special value:
Kerkrade is the only Botanical Garden and museum in the south of the Netherlands and as such is attractive for the Dutch Botanic Garden Collection Foundation to include as an accepted collection.
Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:
This collection primarily contains species less known or un represented in the other NP Conifer collections. Collaboration and exchange of species is limited at this stage.
Collection size:
1 genus, 1 species and 32 cultivars.
Special value:
Of the known 58 cultivars, 32 are present in the collection. One other Cryptomeria collection exists but this is only open to commercial growers.
Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:
As reflected by its name the genus Cryptomeria [from the Greek kryptos = to hide and meros = part] embraces many obscure characteristics. The differences exhibited in habit amongst the species and cultivars is enormous with each appearing quite distinct and the smallest being not much taller than 60 cm in height.
Collection Madagascar [under construction]
Collection size:
34 genera, 252 species and 21 cultivars.
Special value:
This collection was started in 1987 when it became evident that plants from Madagascar were underrepresented in Dutch collections. The majority of the species present are from the genera Aloe, Euphorbia and Kalanchoe.
Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:
Apart from the genera mentioned above this collection includes several endemic genera and species such as Ischnolepis, Folotsia, Seyrigia, Pachypodium, Xerosicyos, Zygosicyos, Alluaudia, Alluaudiopsis, Didierea and Uncarina.
Collaboration and exchange of species is limited.
