Mangrove in the greenhouse Mangrove

NP collection present:

Mangrove plants

Collection size:

15 genera, 23 species

Special value:

Growing in a greenhouse specially designed for mangroves enables the plants to enjoy both brackish tidal areas and shallow coastal environments. Under these conditions the plants flower and produce fruits. The collection is unsurpassed in Europe and is the main source of material for scientific research for scientists at both Wageningen University and Nijmegen University [physiological research]. General interest is mostly concerned with morphology and function of root systems of Mangroves.

Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:

The mangrove plants are mostly trees but herbs and a few ferns are also present. Members of the public are able to view the mangrove habitat from a walkway.
