Special value:
This Citrus collection represents Citrus species cultivated in The Netherlands during the 17th century, another part of this collection is present at 'Stichting Twickel'. This collection has a high historical value and includes ± 30 trees older than 200 years. These trees have been cultivated at Paleis Het Loo throughout their history. This collection includes the renown 17th century Dutch cultivars of the Bitter Orange [Citrus aurantium].
Also present in the collection are many specimens of other selected species and varieties from different origins. The large variety within this collection contributes to the genepool of Citrus aurantium.
Description and possible [inter]national collaboration:
The collection includes 160 accessions of the genus Citrus, of which 85 % species and varieties of Citrus aurantium. Also present in the collection are young and very old tree specimen. Since 1992 there has been a special effort to try and rejuvenate this collection. Together with 'Stichting Twickel this collection forms the Dutch Citrus collection.
That part of the collection growing at Twickel is scientifically supervised by the garden curator of Paleis Het Loo.
