Mission Statement

The Stichting Nationale Plantencollectie [SNP] - the Dutch Botanic Garden Collections Foundation [DBGCF] - was established in 1998 as a continuation of the Stichting Nederlandse Plantentuinen - the Dutch Botanic Gardens Foundation which was established in 1988.

The National Plant Collection [NPC] is a scientifically managed living plant collection in which the seperate components are jointly maintained by the participating botanic gardens. The NPC consists of taxonomically revised plant collections and are either significant importance from a scientific or cultural perspective or of significance to The Netherlands. The NPC is housed throughout a number of different botanic gardens.

The mission of the DBGCF is to conserve, improve, and coordinate the
National Plant Collection.

The primary goals are:

  • conservation and improvement of the plant collections that are of national
    importance,
  • conservation of biodiversity in the light of the Biodiversity Convention
  • genebank functions
  • prevention of unnecessary duplication of collections through assignment of
    tasks and specialisation
